The icon in the inventory/hotbar Instead of facing towards the player, like a greater than(>) symbol, being easy to spot, it is faced away, with the back of the model facing the player, this makes it hard to tell which is the block, and which is the stair, because of the number blocking the rest of the model.

This may be a intended feature, but it is such a downgrade from the previous icon, I assume its a bug.
