Items that do not have extra damage values in survival do not display the parent texture.

Examples:

/give @p apple 1 1
/give @p diamond 1 1
/give @p stick 1 1
/give @p written_book 1 1

This was not present in 14w21b or any version prior to 14w25. And this will affect many custom maps negatively.
