I have noticed the stairs I recently place down always face towards the north. Both normal and upside-down stairs only face north when I place them. It does this with cobblestone and stone-brick stairs, so I assume it would do that with all types. Also, the model for the stairs (in the inventory) is backwards. I am not sure if these two things are connected
