Placing a block of "wood" (tested with Birch or Dark Oak) from a tree (ie, not planks) results in an immediate crash

I am able to reproduce this crash consistently.

Tested with Birch or Dark Oak, from a tree.
Other blocks (cobble, birch planks, dirt, furnaces, crafting tables, torches, doors) do not cause the crash.
Tested placing on both grass or other Dark Oak blocks.
