When in any kind of pvp scenario where you're fighting a player melee, if you are the one backpedaling, even when both players are at the same distance, only the player moving foward will get confirmed hits, while you will not. At the most you'll see the enchantment/critical particles come off if you hit them for your client, but the server will never register it. It could be just an issue with server delay between the client, but it seems to happen even in LAN servers with people on the same network.
