Kind of hard to explain, but the screenshots do it justice. When buttons, unpowered redstone torches, and possibly more wall-placed objects have a block directly above them, their textures turn much darker despite having enough light. Also, as can be seen with the redstone torches, having a block at their side also makes their textures darker.
