The attached picture explains the situation. When a button has a side facing north, that side is dark. If the button itself is facing north, the top side is dark. In addition to this but not shown on the picture, buttons on the bottom of blocks have their bottom-facing texture darkened. This does not affect southward facing buttons or upward facing ones.
