When you destroy a block, sometimes the block's entity will float up through the block above it, like in an item elevator. I discovered the while caving underneath my base, I was destroying blocks and not getting them sometimes, e.g cobblestone or coal. When I returned above ground I saw that there were cobble entities sitting on the ground. Also when cutting logs the wood will often float to the top of the tree.
