When pressing against the side of the extended west-facing piston, I thought I was supposed to stop moving, but then the player passed through the arm of the extended piston and exited the other side!

To reproduce the bug, I simply placed another piston, facing west, and moved the player through it. It doesn't seem to affect pistons of any other orientation
