some blocks I am dropping aren't showing up

I thought you should be able to see the block on the ground that you dropped

I dropped a block and I can't see it floating there, I am on my server and it is annoying that you can't see them but they are there

Steps to Reproduce:
1. get a block that doesn't cover an entire box (i.e. painting, redstone items, etc.
2. hit 'q' or what ever key is bound to drop a block
3. may see block and may not
