Completely new to Minecraft. it won't start properly. After pressing "Play" in launcher 1.3.7 and selecting "single player", the minecraft 1.7.4 window comes, "builds terrain" but shows eventually "not responding" in the upper left corner. Clicking it away generates another WINDOWS window telling "Java(TM) platform SE binary not responding". The "Development Console" tab in the launcher says "...ERROR]: Game ended with bad state (exit code -805306369)"

Several Re-tries with always same end:
Re-download of launcher >> same effect
In the Java control panel I de-selected the Java-Plugin next generation option (read somewhere that it might help) >> same effect
I uninstalled and re-installed Java (read somewhere that it might help) >> same effect.
