It looks like stepping out of a boat has changed in 1.7.4 (1.7.3?).
In 1.7.4 the player is put in the air above the boat when pressing LSHIFT to dismount the boat. Thus the player falls down on the boat that gets destructed!
This is not so in 1.7.2: when pressing LSHIFT the player is placed next to the boat and the boat stays where it is.
Tested with the same world and setup (boat in water, adjacent to sand) in both versions.
