Testing minecraft on various windows versions has shown that Minecraft cannot handle audio device switching. I first ran into this bug when switching from surround sound to head phones, minecraft did not make any noise; even when I switched back.
Logically I could just restart minecraft and viola the sound is back, but that tends to be more hassle; especially when you play full screen with a x512 resource pack enabled (8-12 minute load up time).
