When you place a torch under a falling sand, the sand noramally gets destroyed by the torch. But if you destroy the sand block and place the toarch really fast, the torch doesn't destroy the sand and the sand is just floating in the air. This can be very annoying when you farm sand and the sand doesn't get destroyed. In the screenshot you can see how it loosks:
