So in a creative world I had a brilliant idea: baby zombies are one block tall, slabs are half a block tall, if I use slabs their droppings should go uncrushed while they get squashed. turns out slabs (at least the oak planks slabs) don't cause suffocation.

I haven't tested it yet but it would be a good idea to look at stairs too. they could also be bugged.

I hope this world helps. there are zombie spawn eggs in the chest near the mob crusher.

If for whatever reason it doesn't help here are the instructions for the machine. place eight sticky pistons on a four by four grid facing each other eight blocks away.

On the bottom place slabs. on top place (don't do gravel and sand).

Build a box around the crusher and make sure to leave to backs of the pistons exposed.

place two blocks on the bottom two pistons and then two more forming a 2x2 grid on each side.

Place repeaters behind the pistons on the 2X2 grid then connect the repeaters together with redstone dust and a lever.

Build a small sheet of ice above the crusher (to keep zombies from burning).

Now spawn zombies in. make sure you get a baby.

Once you get a baby flip the lever. if there is no bug the baby zombie should die. if there is a bug he will live.
