      Note

As an alternative you can use the Sneak key (left shift by default) + Use Item/Place Block key (right-click by default), the axe will take priority over the shield (if it's not held in the off-hand).

When you hold an axe and a shield together, no matter which one is in the main hand, the shield blocking is always prioritized over axe right-clicking functions (stripping logs and scrapping copper blocks). The axe right-clicking ceases to work completely.

This is inconsistent with other tool/item behaviors, where the right-click function of the main hand tool/item is prioritized, such as shovels, hoes, shears, buckets, bare hands, etc.

      How to reproduce:
Hold a shield and an axe together, then right-click on logs, waxed copper blocks, or oxidized copper blocks.

      Expected behaviour:
When the axe is in the main hand, and the shield is in the off hand, like with other types of tools, the axe should perform its right-click functions first when applicable, then the shield should be raised.

When the shield is in the main hand, and the axe is in the off hand, the shield should be raised first, and the axe should not function.

      Observed behaviour:
No matter which hand it is in, the axe right-clicking functions aren't performed at all, and the shield is always raised first.
