Axe works on halfslabs which are not made of wood. You won't get the halfslab back if you mine it, but you will mine it very quickly. And higher level of efficiency also work, so dia axe eff 5 can dig it almost instantly. I try it with iron and diamond axe and it worked on both, so i think it works on every axe...
