These are the steps I took to get this glitch to appear:

1) Have a shortened minecraft window so that the crafting grid menu is overlapped by the search/green book menu

2) Open the crafting table, if the search menu isn't on top of the crafting grid, click the green book so it is.

3) Search for something, I think it only works if the item can switch between different versions, like wood types, I used a fence

4) Shift click on the item so you are brought back to the crafting grid, I did this without the required things in my inventory so there were those ghost-like blocks in the crafting grid telling me what I would need for the item

5) While still holding shift, click the green book to get back to the search menu

6) Hovering over the, in my case, fence option, leads to weird doubled up text.
