Sometimes a spruce sapling won't grow with a whole stack of bone meals, but other saplings grew with even less space around.
So I am attempting for the second time (I also tried on 1.16 before) to make a spruce tree fence (not a fence block, but a natural fence made out of spruce trees). It's important that sometimes two very close saplings (less than 3 Manhattan distance) both grow. In my natural fence, a sapling won't grow with completely free 3x3 column, and at 5x5 layer only having spruce leaves.
If I test the "5x5" requirement by placing 4 dirt pillars in the corners inside a 5x5 column and placing the sapling in the middle, it won't grow.
If I test it by placing spuce leaves along the edges inside of a 5x5 column (so, leaving a 3x3 clumn free in the middle, but on all sides around have the leaves), then the sapling will grow.
If I grow 2 spruce tress so that they don't leave a full 5x5 column free, then a new sapling in the middle SOMETIMES won't grow.
I attached a photo of a situation when it won't grow.
