Can't cancel bow shot without significant risk of death with other items on the hotbar, such as ender pearls

I can cancel my bow show by switching to another item on my hotbar. This is extremely risky when some other items are on the hotbar, like water, lava, and ender pearls.

For example, I will take my bow to the Nether to attack from a distance, but I also bring ender pearls to get around. The problem I have is that when canceling a bow shot with the scrollwheel (in the event my target was pathed too close to a pigman), there is serious risk that I might accidentally switch to my ender pearl.

This is EXTREMELY dangerous, and has on more than one occasion launched me into lava or some other very unpleasant location. Using an ender pearl accidentally in battle can also cause death if it falls into a ravine, off a cliff, or my health is already low from battle.

When switching from a bow, I would like to see the right click behavior NOT carry over to the next item until after I have release my mouse button and pressed it again.

This same mechanic appears to be present with other combinations, such as with a lava bucket. But it is especially problematic with a bow.
