Unable to dye leather armor using the cauldron method

What I thought would happen was...:
After dropping my leather armor into the dyed water it should have turned into white dyed armor

What actually happened was...:
After dropping the armor into the cauldron, they did not change 

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start a creative world 
2. Grab: a cauldron, bucket of water, white dye, a piece of leather armor in the creative item menu 
3. Place cauldron on ground

4. Add water to cauldron 

5. Dye water

6. Drop leather armor into cauldron
