I am pushing a villager 1 bock to the right with 2 sticky pistons and sandstone blocks in front.  On the other side there are regular pistons to push the villager back 1 block.  Only one set of pistons are on at a time.  A lever is flipped to cause the pistons to extend or retract.

Issue... if you put stone type blocks in front of the sticky pistons, the villager will be suffocated by the stone when pushed by the pistons.  However, if you change the 2 sandstone blocks to glass, the villager lives.  Put sandstone on top and glass on bottom, villager dies.  Put sandstone on bottom and glass on top, villager lives.

Also, I did test with a flat wall in the place of the minecart, behavior did not change.
