Chat messages and Signs are not appearing

      My friend and I are on a Vanilla Minecraft Realms world, and we are unable to chat in-game and neither he nor I can see each other's text.  Text on signs also disappears after typing it. We've both attempted to restart Minecraft launcher but that does not fix it.
