In Minecraft 1.17.1 in my single-player survival world, the magma and soul sand are not creating bubbles and making me move up/down when I get in them. Does anybody know why?

Edit: I just figured out how to fix this but I need to place another bucket of water for every block it goes up. This is a lot of work so does anyone know a way around this?
