SIgns placed on fence posts do not have the option to type something on them

I wanted to place a sign o a fence around my house and type on the sign that it was my house

When i placed the sign, the screen in which you type what you want to say never came up it simply placed a plain sign

1. Place a fence post
2. Try to place a sign on it
3. See if it is letting you type onto the sign
