When opening your inventory and having the crafting recipe book enabled, it will sometimes glitch so it is over your inventory instead of beside it - this also applies when using a crafting table.

The only way to solve this, I have found, is to click over where the book would be in the menu (e.g. under players crafting area in the inventory or off to the left in the crafting table menu.)

Closing Minecraft completely does not solve this issue, at least for me.
