The bug

When you have barrier blocks you can see them when you have the item selected in your hotbar. But, if you have the item in the off-hand slot, they disappear from view.

How to reproduce:

1. Place a barrier block.
2. Put the barrier item in the off-hand slot (you shouldn't have it on the main hand).
3. The barrier block disappears from view.
