I've recently been playing on a realm on 1.17 in Java edition, and I have an enclosure for axolotls that I both tamed by picking them up in a bucket and by feeding them tropical fish in a bucket, yet after periods of time they despawn. There is no way for them to drown or be out of water long enough to suffocate, yet they keep disappearing over time.
