It seems that as a bed is being placed, if an entity moves into the head block of the bed, the bed will fail to place. The bed simply disappears, with no item dropping.

In my specific example, a tamed wolf walked through the head block of the black bed that I was placing. The bed did not drop on the floor, place, or return to my inventory. As such, there is no trace that I ever even made the bed.
