Axolotls arent pathfinding to the water correctly, when there's lava in front of them they will just go in it and won't avoid it. If they're surrounded by lava (in a ring formation) they won't go in the lava even if there is water five blocks away. But if you place a block near a block that they are on, their pathfinding will break and they will go into the lava again.
