The last time I played the game was version 1.12.2.
Since then I've started playing on 1.16.5 and noticed a major difference in how sprinting works.
The first major issue is that sprinting persists even after the player stops moving. What I mean by this is that, in 1.12.2, if the player stopped moving forward while sprinting, the sprint would end immediately. If you moved forward again, you would be back at a walking pace and had to toggle the sprint again.
In 1.16.5, if you stop moving, then move again, the sprint is still going as if you'd never stopped in the first place. Furthermore, pressing the sprint key to toggle the sprint will not stop you from sprinting if you're still moving. To stop sprinting you must stop moving, then press the sprint key, then you may move forward at walking speed.
This goes a step further; hold to sprint does not seem to work, as sprinting was still acting on a toggle even while hold to sprint was active.
I initially encountered this issue with mods, but quickly switched to vanilla to be sure, and the issue persisted there as well, meaning that mods were not the cause of the issue.
I then reverted to 1.12.2 to test the sprint there, and it works in the way I mentioned: Sprinting stops when the player does, and must be toggled to start again manually.
I'm not sure if this was an intentional change on Mojang's part, but I wanted to assume it was a bug after mentioned it in the official discord and people started yelling at me that they'd done nothing to change sprinting.
