Upon entering the end, you spawn on the obsidian as always, but find your self at the bottom of a huge island that almost goes to world height. At the top is the portal frame for when you beat the dragon, and the pillars are in the island near the bottom. The dragon spawns in the ground and is untouchable with the over load of blocks.
