There is an issue with the alpha channel of the grass_block_side_overlay in the new OpenGL implementation causing the transparent part of the image to be rendered black. I'm not sure exactly sure how this issue is caused. The issue appears to go away as you get closer and gets worse when your FOV changes while sprinting.
