Attorney for the Victim: "Your honor, and members of the jury, I present EXHIBIT A, taken from a public site that describes lightning mechanics in Minecraft Java Edition, which presumably includes version 1.16.4:
"The target block is checked again for the following conditions:
- Target block can see the sky.
- Rain (not snow) is falling in the target block.
- Thus, lightning does not naturally strike within cold biomes or biomes where it does not rain (except in the Console Edition).
If these conditions pass, lightning strikes.
When lightning strikes, all entities within a 6×12×6 region horizontally centered on the northwest corner of the target block with the bottom edge 3 below the target block are struck by lightning"
EXHIBIT A: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Thunderstorm
Furthermore, a statement from the architect of the structure indicated that Dolly, our victim, was located at coordinates 460 66 350, and that any presumptive lightning would have had to strike, per the rule above, at y=77, a distance of 11. Furthermore, that lightning strike would have had to penetrate through two floors of the solid smooth stone ceiling to kill Dolly."
In other words, the "kill" range should only have been, per the above-described lightning mechanic and starting at y=74 (three blocks down), x=(457 through 463); Dist = 6, y=(68 through 80); Dist = 12, z=(347 through 353). However, Dolly was safely 2 blocks from this kill zone, through two floors with a smooth stone ceiling. So then, we ask, if Dolly was outside this kill zone, why did Dolly die?
Audience: {Gasping Audibly}
Judge: {Striking the gavel} "Order in the courtroom. Counsel, you may proceed to question the witness."
Attorney for the Victim: {turns to judge} "Your honor." {addressing the witness} "Continue describing the events of that fateful evening."
Dory: "As I mentioned, Dolly and I are twins. Our boss was working on a nice new wool farm for us and as he turned in for the evening, he awoke and ..." [sniffle]
Attorney for the Victim's Family: "Go on ..."
Judge: Bailiff, please give tissues to the witness.
Bailiff: {nods} Yes, your honor.
Dory: {to the Bailiff} "Thank you." {addresses the attorney} " ... and .... when he woke up the next morning to collect Dolly's wool all he saw was Dolly's white wool and a cooked mutton chop." [sobs uncontrollably]
Attorney for the Victim's Family: Your honor, I would like to submit EXHIBIT B, showing the cooked mutton chop ... er ... I mean ... Dolly ... the victim's remains. At this time, in support of the publicly noticed lightning mechanic above, I am including EXHIBIT C & D.
Dory: "And it wasn't just Dolly. Villagers deep in the ground have also been reported being turned to witches through multiple layers of smooth stone. This never happened before our boss upgraded from 1.14.4. Now that our world runs 1.16.4, lightning behaves differently."
Attorney for the Victim's Family: "And to your knowledge, the investigation is ongoing?"
Dory: "Yes, but it's murder I tell you! Why? Why does our world have to go through this upheaval during every upgrade? Why?" {sobs audibly}
Attorney for the Victim's Family: "Thank you. No further questions for this witness, your Honor."
...
Narrator: Lightning, such a powerful, mysterious force of nature that not even lightning's creators quite grasp. Try as they may to tame it, at best they can introduce a bug fix. And should the creator say, "Nay, lightning as it is will remain!", perhaps in memory of dear Dolly and to ensure that no more sheep, villagers, dogs, cats, parrots, etc. perish in such manner, then we only must ask to clarify the rules so that structures may be erected by the diligent players of Minecraft to protect their villager friends and pet buddies.
Next Scene: The memorial service and the burial of Dolly's remains, were developed by the boss's daughter, who like her father, loves the game but expects some consistency to the rules. Submitted as EXHIBIT_E ![]()
