Since the introduction of the End dimension, falling into the void has caused a fast death. This was originally quite reasonable, because there was no way for a player to recover. However, with the introduction of elytra in 1.9, and the ability to use fireworks for propulsion since 1.11.1, the fast death is now inappropriate: falling into the void is something players can recover from. The "bug" here is that subsequent changes to the game have made an originally logical game mechanic no longer completely appropriate.
Currently, death takes two or three seconds, and a panic reaction can easily consume those precious seconds. Moreover, a slow connection or server lag (e.g. due to chunk generation) can result in the server believing a player hit terrain, stopped flying, fell, and voided out, without the player seeing what the server thinks they hit. Crucially, such a death feels to a player like a control screw or fake difficulty, as the player feels like they didn't get a fair chance to recover.
I suggest improving the void death mechanic by having void damage being significantly reduced or delayed for a player wearing elytra. This is a small change for a comparatively large quality-of-life improvement. Making the change not conditional on wearing an elytra would give players a chance to put on an elytra, which may or may not be a desirable mechanic.
