Geodes usually have a large section missing from them where no amethyst or casing blocks generate, which is presumably intended for connections with caves. However, in cases where geodes are indeed touching caves, this absent area is very commonly pointing in completely the opposite direction, preventing access to the geode without breaking blocks.
