When we make lanterns and take the iron nuggets from the crafting table with a bundle, we can still make the lantern. And when we pick up the lantern, the torches we left in the crafting slot multiply by 2, and we still have the lantern.
So we no longer need coal to create torches, so we have endless torches and lanterns.
