unable to load minecraft, check configuration

      i've seen this issue reported with modded minecraft, but i am also  getting it with  vanilla.

      everytime i hit play game onthe start menu it says "sorry,unable to start minecraft. Please check your configuration" 

      anyone know how to fix this?
