I am running a server on my desktop and then running the launcher and connecting with "localhost". (I ngrok localhost:25565 and give my friends the generated address so they can connect, too)

Today I had internet issues and I wanted to play the world even if my friends couldn't connect.

The launcher prompted to "Play offline" so I did and I tried connecting to the server but was greeted with:

"Failed to login: the authentication servers are currently down for maintenance"

I was surprised to see it even try to use the authentication servers, so, if nothing else comes of this ticket, maybe add a new error message saying "You are playing offline and cannot join servers" as it is currently misleading.

Regardless, would it be possible for the server to check if the authentication servers are down and, if they "are", allow connections coming from the LAN or localhost? I imagine security/fraud concerns will give this request a big "no", but there's no harm in asking.
