In 20w18a, spruce saplings are no longer able to grow next to one another and a gap must exist between them (See pictures). In previous versions (snapshots and 1.15.2) we were able to place the saplings as in the picture and grow them with (or without) bone meal and without. Happens both in single player and multiplayer worlds.
