When I was trying to grow a 4 block tree from all variants of saplings that allow you to grow them when placing 4 together does not work.  Even when you try to bonemeal it or even increase the randomtickspeed in the world the 4 block trees do not grow they stay as saplings.  But when you take a single jungle or spruce sapling and grow a 1 block tree it works.
