I built a TNT cannon on a minecraft server I am hosting to play with friends and the cannon kills me.

More specifically: TNT damages players and mobs even when dispensed directly into a body of water.

I built the cannon on a single player survival mode and it launches me up no problem, no damage dealt. 

I am using the official server software from minecraft.net, nothing else, no pluggins.
