A trident with Loyalty 3 disappears after being thrown and successfully hitting a mob.  It does not just turn into an entity that cannot be picked up.  It is similar to how arrows disappear after hitting a mob.

If the trident does not hit a mob, but rather a block, then the trident does return as normal.
