So I created a new creative testing world after being inspired by Ilmango to create and test some mob farms in ideal spawning conditions. I created a superflat world with a single layer of white stained glass at y-level 1, very similar to Ilmango's testing worlds.
I then created a spawning platform made of purpur blocks and closed it up so that the light level was 0 on every block. I turned the difficulty to Normal, made sure that doMobSpawning was set to true, and flew about 30 blocks away. Nothing spawned on the platform.
I then realised that mobs may not be able to spawn on purpur blocks since they are generated only in the End, so I replaced all of the purpur blocks with polished andesite and flew again to 30 blocks away. 2 bats spawned, and then occasionally a single skeleton on the spawning platform, who quickly despawned soon after.
A few minutes later, numerous zombies, spiders, skeletons and a spider jockey spawned on the top of the spawning "box," meaning on top of the enclosure I had made to cover the spawning platform, so I placed buttons on the top to stop mobs spawning there.
I have been left very confused and frustrated that the mobs that spawned (or didn't spawn), didn't seem to be obeying the mob spawning rules on the minecraft wiki, and I can't understand why Ilmango's testing worlds spawned so many mobs as soon as he set doMobSpawning to true, whereas mine took its time.
I have searched Jira and discovered similar mob spawning problems, however, they either occurred in a different update to 1.14.4 or weren't even on Java Edition, which is what I'm playing on.
If there is anything I am missing in terms of spawning mechanics or game rules, please let me know here!
