When updating painting NBT data with "/data merge entity @e[type=painting,limit=1] {Invulnerable:1}" the painting will become invisible and occasionally pop off the wall to drop the item.  When it does not pop off it stays invisible like it doesn't exist but a new painting cannot be placed in the same location. You must break the block the painting is on to destroy it.
