First off, I know this has already been mentioned. It has been happening across both Bedrock and Java versions since the Update Aquatic. I am here to simply provide more information and hopefully allow the developers to better decide how to optimize rendering.
For starters, Bedrock edition is none of my concern. Even on very low end devices I have had no problems at all running Bedrock edition. The issue lies with Java Edition.
Currently I am running a client using the Optifine mod. While Optifine is not developed by Mojang i still think there are some things worth noting.
First off, Optifine in many cases makes the game run significantly better. However, unless i switch on Fast Render (not compatible with shaders) the game will drop in FPS when near oceans. With the vanilla graphics, this only happens when first loading the world as the chunks need to appear first. However, I think it is worth noting that since Optifine struggles to render these then theres no doubt that vanilla minecraft will. Vanilla Minecraft runs much slower than the Optifine mod.
This gets even worse with custom shader programs installed. Using Sildurs Vibrant Lite causes significant FPS drops when near any ocean, even on the lowest settings with all post processing effects turned off. I am using a GTX 1050, by the way. While Sildurs is also not within Mojang's scope of development, it's still important to mention that these custom shaders would normally run at 60 FPS with no issues until I get near the ocean where there is an abundance of kelp and/or seagrass, which confirms that the kelp is whats causing lag and that it is probably GPU related.
This mostly concerns me because of what lower end devices would be like. My cousin plays using the unmodded version of the game with no visual overhauls, using his (slightly slower) gaming laptop, and he already gets minor FPS drops during normal gameplay on servers. Considering how much more demanding on the GPU kelp is compared to the rest of the game i can imagine him getting severe lag in survival mode if he were to encounter an ocean.
I would provide profiler data but I don't know how to get it. If someone would tell me how, that'd be great. I would love to provide more info.
