After tying a horse, leaving it for awhile, maybe entering the nether, de-loading chunks etc, the rope will disappear but is still there. Untying the horse will still give the lead and placing it back on will re-render the rope.

Also something that would help a lot would be to be able to tie the rope on the post instead of jus the animal.
