If you put a water bucket in a dispenser and fire the dispenser, the water will be placed. However, when the dispenser is fired again, the water is removed but the bucket is also thrown out of the dispenser at the same time, losing the initial water bucket. 

When doing the same process with a lava bucket, the lava can be placed and retrieved as has done in the past.
