Holding right-click with a shield and a trident causes both the trident throwing animation and the shield blocking animation to show at once

      If you hold right-click to charge your trident while the shield is in the offhand, both of their animations display. Notice the shield is in the blocking position without the shield actually facing in the blocking position.
