Magma blocks appear to have lost the ability to retain a certain light level. I am not sure if this is has been intentionally removed, but it was an intended feature when the block got introduced back in 1.10. And to be honest, it was quite cool to play with it. Perhaps the feature got lost when the new lighting engine got introduced.
